Historical Pieces

We are planning a series of pottery with a strong historical look, if not visual replicas. We will not be reproducing the exact surface found on the original pieces for several reasons: one, the original glazes were closely guarded guild secrets; two, it is unlikely that those glazes would be food-safe to modern standards; three, some of those pieces were not glazed at all, definitely making them unsafe for food by today's standards; and four, those pieces were pit-fired in a way not feasible for us to replicate. We will try to duplicate the colors and textures to replicate the look of a piece, but always retaining its food-safe status.

Many of the medieval pieces bore a simple medium green glaze with no other surface decoration other than the occasional stamped marks, and were often of a medium to dark colored clay.
